National Parks In Sri Lanka
Yala National Park
Located in Kataragama District, Yala national park is world famous due to its high density of Leopards that is hardly see in other national parks in the world. Not only Leopards, but also Elephants, crocodiles, birds, peacocks, buffaloes, deers, wild boar and variety of other types of animals are seen here. Usually, the seasonal time to see most of these animals is the mid-season of February to July as the animal dispersion can occur at the end of the dry season therefore better chances to see more wild animals. It is recommended to arrange a safari jeep tour beforehand your arrival at the park.
Wilpattu National Park
Located in northwest of Sri Lanka just ahead of puttlam district and about 60km from the sacred city Anuradhapura where you can see the oldest tree in the world said to have existed. Wilpattu national park is the biggest national park as far as Sri Lanka is concerned. Animals such as wild elephants, birds, wild pigs, deers and crocodiles are commonly seen here.
Kumana National Park
Located in Ampara district in the southeast coastal region of sri lanka, kumana national park is a perfect place to safari and to see diverse of birdlife including wide variety of native birds and migratory birds. Kumana is the main sanctuary to nest and breed of different variety of bird species in Sri Lanka. Some of the bird species such as Duck, Purple Swamphan, Night Heron, Waterhen and Moorhen etc are seen here. Linked with Yala national park previously, Kumana sanctuary is named as ‘Kumana national park’ in 2006 separating the Yala Park.
Bundala national park
Bundala national park is a year around wildlife surveyor to see variety of animal species including elephants, different varieties of migratory birds, coastal lagoons, marine turtles (loggerhead, green, olive ridley, leatherback etc.), crocodiles and giant squirrels etc. Located in between the southern coastal cities Hambanthota and Kirinda, National park stretches the area of approx. 62 sq. kms. Visitors has an opportunity to visit Yala national park (only 30km) and the ancient and sacred city ‘Tissamaharama’ which is only 16km away.
Wasgamuwa national park
Situated in the central provinces of Sri Lanka near Nuwara Eliya, wasgamuwa spreads nearly 393 sq. km area. Some of the different species of animals that you can see here are Elephants, leopards, sloth bears, grassy plains and hilly ridges etc. It is recommended to visit during the months June to September to see the best wildlife here.
